Chained: Personal Struggles Therapy.

Very insightful interview that delves into the band’s history, creative process, and the personal significance of their music. We have the pleasure to discussting with the American band Chained, the singer Phillip Gibson have shared their experiences with us. So here is our interview that we are really happy to have you read.

  1. Chained started in 2019 in North Carolina, did you have any other musical experiences before dedicating yourselves to this project?

Most of us(Phil, Matt, and Michael) were in a straight edge band called xHONORx before this. Evan, has been a part of other bands as well. Such as Overturn and Stoneman. He’s currently in a band called Warning Order check them out!

 2. What comes out of other past experiences in Chained through the musical aspect?

I guess we approached this band from a mentality of knowing what we did wrong in our past band. Lyrically everything stems from something our vocalist has either experienced, or felt. Instrumentally we approach writing with an open mind taking creative ideas from each individual member.

 3. Did you have a different technical approach for creating the album "Cut Out The Stigma" compared to previous records?

With "Cut Out the Stigma" we approached the writing process very differently. Usually we just write a song and move on, but with the latest release we preproed every song. Really “trimmed the fat” tried to make all the songs seem like singles and not like filler.

 4. How do you respond to media critics who claim that "Cut Out The Stigma" is your most polished work and that the maturity of the lyrics are the best you've released since the beginning of your story?

I would say that makes sense. It’s definitely the hardest we’ve worked on a body of music. Lyrically it’s as raw and emotional we’ve ever been. I believe it’s important for a band to grow with each release.

 5. "Cut Out The Stigma" was released in your fifth year of existence, did you ever think you would release an album so personal in its lyrical content and was it the hardest or most painful in the conception of the lyrics?

I always try to write lyrics as personal as I can in our music. My main goal when starting this band was to be an advocate for mental health. Writing lyrics about personal situations that are relatable to others is what I strive for. As far as it being hard, or painful. I didn’t really feel pain from writing these lyrics. I will say I felt the weight of it. Reliving past experiences, or feelings while writing is honestly therapeutic.

 6. "Mind Slip" resonates with many people on the subject it addresses, can you elaborate more on the lyrics and do you believe it will have an impact?

Facing mental health head on is daunting. We’ve all been there before. In a place where you feel like you’re not doing enough with your life. Like you don’t quite fit into your own skin. A moment where you question your self worth, or even existence. This song faces all of these thoughts without hesitation. It’s important for people to know they’re not alone. People need to know they’re important, and that they’re loved. Everyone goes through moments of anxiety and depression. Never be afraid to express that. It’s okay, to not be okay.

 7. Since your lyrics sometimes orient towards subjects such as mental illness, struggles against depression, anxiety, does what you convey serve as a relief to what you experience?

100% from a young age I’ve always felt like writing down how I’m feeling helps me process those feelings, or experiences. I honestly don’t know what I’d do if I didn’t have this outlet.

 8. Do you believe that in 2024, the taboo regarding mental illnesses seems to have dissipated and that it's easier to discuss the subject?

I don’t think it’ll ever been easy being vulnerable, but I do think people are way more open to talking about their feelings and what they’re going through than they use to be. I think it’s important to check on your loved ones. Don’t be afraid to ask people if they’re okay. Sometimes starting that dialogue and letting someone know you’re down to listen is what it takes.

 9. You have been active in the first part of 2024 and from July 22 to 29, you are going on an American tour, is there a particular date you are most looking forward to playing?

We’re extremely excited about this run with Backbiter and Place Blame in July. Honestly, we’re looking forward to it all. Some of the ones were the most excited about are. 7/22 in Charlotte, NC it’s in our home state and the first day we meet the other bands. 7/25 in Birmingham, AL because we get to play LCY with Gimmick. And Capra. 7/27 we’re playing an off day from the tour package in Tulsa, OK, with Prevention and Doubt.

It's interesting to see how they have evolved over time, learning from their past experiences and channeling that into their current music. The way they address media criticism and the resonance of the song 'Mind Slip' with many people on the subject it addresses is particularly striking. Keep this band on your mind, they have a great musical potential for yourself. We wish them a beautiful road for the coming tour; they are very active, and that's what keeps blogs like ours alive. Thank you Chained and Jacob from Upstate Records Europe, for this wonderful literary opportunity.
